Chapter 6

Kowalski slammed his head on the table. Nothing was working! Nothing!
He folded his flippers over his head. He couldn't lose his nerve. He wouldn't.
He straightened. The clock was ticking. There was no time to panic. The weight of a team member rested on shoulders…or rather lack of shoulders.
Kowalski was out of ideas, and was now just sitting helplessly. Though, he did make a well-stressed mental note to never let anyone in the lab unless completely necessary ever again.
He had a deep down feeling that the answer was in plain sight, but his mind didn't work like that.
Oh, why did this have to happen? Why did it have to happen to Private? Private never did anything to deserve this.
Kowalski could seek out Private when he needed the occasional kind word or two. The young penguin also had a knack for making sure most things came to a happy ending. He had absolute loyalty to his comrades, an affectionate personality, and admiration for the older members of the team, and those were just the A's. Kowalski could also note the fact that Private had nearly forced his friendship on him during the first few weeks when Private was stationed with them. Then, Kowalski didn't give Private so much as a passing glance. He was just another operative he barely knew and didn't care for that much. But, Private felt different. Private was at Kowalski's heels for two days straight. Something about the tall, Intelligent, deep-voiced penguin intrigued the newbie. While Private constantly pestered Rico and Skipper for a bit, he always circled back to Kowalski. Skipper and Rico enjoyed the praise they got from wide-eyed, curious Private. Kowalski, however, almost resented him. He didn't have time for Private and his continuous questioning. But, eventually, he decided to give
Private a chance.
He allowed Private to sit and watch him work, and yes, ask everything that was on his mind. Private wandered around the lab, finally stopping at Kowalski's side. "So," he muttered, his sweet, innocent accent making Kowalski twitch a little. "What are you working on?"
Kowalski LOVED to brag on himself. That particular question made him stop moving for a split second. It wasn't frequently asked because no one seemed to care. "This is going to be a ray that, in theory, will have the ability to rearrange the molecular and DNA make-up of a living thing and…" he stopped himself. "This is probably boring you to death, isn't it?"
To his surprise, Private shook his head. "No, not really."
In truth, Private didn't understand a word Kowalski had said. That still hadn't changed much to the present. But, he still listened attentively as Kowalski spoke.
Kowalski was startled at first. Then, he stifled a smile, and went on.
Private and Kowalski had become close friends since then. Kowalski was willing to look past Private's irrational likes and dislikes and his storybook philosophies. Kowalski even found himself loosing his shut-in-like personality. Skipper and Rico had also changed quite a bit since Private's arrival. The four became tight-knit, more than just a team.
Kowalski brought himself out of his thoughts, his eyes burning. His heart ached at the thought of Private…gone forever.
"Kowalski," Skipper's voice spoke from the door. Kowalski jerked, quickly wiping his eyes. "Yes, Skipper?"
Skipper pushed the door open. "It's almost time for lights out."
"Oh," Kowalski answered, realizing there was a burning lump in his throat. "Aye-aye, Skipper."
Skipper didn't even try to put on a hard face. "How's it going?"
Kowalski swallowed, turning away. "Oh, it's…going."
"Alright then," Skipper replied distantly. It was easy to tell something was also on his mind. "Private will be in soon." He left.
Kowalski turned back around. He slumped to the ground. It was getting hard not to give up. He buried his face in his flippers.
The door opened again, this time Private arrived. "Kowalski, are you alright?"
Kowalski looked up. "What? Me? I'm…I'm fine."
Private blinked, still looking sick. "You don't look fine; you look like you've been-"
"Don't be ridiculous, Private."
"It's okay, Kowalski," Private waddled over to him, sitting beside him against the wall. "What's wrong?"
Kowalski sighed; storybook philosophy again. "Well…it's sort of like…kind of like…similar to um…" He stammered. "Well, it's a long story. The point is…there's something very important to me that I can't fix."
"An invention?"
"Uh, yes."
"Oh, what invention?"
"That isn't important, Private."
Private nodded, pressing a flipper to the temple of his head. "Ugh, my head hurts."
Kowalski swallowed again, trying to smile and hide it. "Private, can I tell you something?"
"Of course."
Kowalski tapped his flippers together. "Well…this thing I can't fix. It hasn't been around long, but it's really special. And…it can't ever be replaced."
"But, can't you build another?"
Kowalski paused. "No, Private. I can't just build another," he hugged Private a little. "It wouldn't be the same."
Kowalski knew Private didn't understand, and that was okay. It was a form of getting this off his chest.
Private nudged Kowalski. "It's okay," he assured. "I'm sure you can fix it. You can't give up. If it's so special, you shouldn't throw it away."
Kowalski looked away.
"Concentration and dedication; Skipper always says that…sometimes anyway."
Concentration and dedication.
"Kowalski, are you sure you're okay?"
Kowalski shook his head. "…No."
The strategist was startled when he felt a pair of flippers wrapping around his torso. Kowalski reacted very little, just blinking rapidly. He kept his beak shut as Private pulled away and stood up. "Well, goodnight Kowalski. I hope things work out."
Kowalski watched Private go from the corner of his eye.
He was not giving up.
They needed Private.
No Slash involved. Brotherly love.
